I Know You Know - Esperanza Spalding

This is a cover of Esperanza Spalding's fabulous tune, I Know You Know. This song is taken from her second album, 'Esperanza' which was released in 2008. It has a neo-soul/funk/samba sound which is well in fitting with Esperanza's wide variety of influences and love of fusion music, evident on the rest of the album. I love the dizzying melody to the chorus and the youthful feel to this song! This footage is taken from my final jazz recital at the Guildhall School of Music 19/07/2012 featuring Ed Blunt on piano, Gili Lopes on bass and Dave Ingamells on drums.

Weak - Gretchen Parlato / JoJo / SWV

Weak is from the acclaimed 2009 album, 'In A Dream' by Gretchen Parlato, although the original song was by the American pop singer, JoJo  from her 2004 album of the same name. I admire what Gretchen has done with this song and I like the idea of revamping old favourites into new styles. In my arrangement I have reverted the chorus to 4/4 from 6/4, mixing the original feel with Gretchen's fantastic adaptation. This footage is taken from my final jazz recital at the Guildhall School of Music 19/07/2012 and features Ed Blunt on piano, Gili Lopes on bass and Dave Ingamells on drums.

Caged Bird - Alicia Keys

This is my take on Alicia Keys' beautiful song, Caged Bird from her fantastic 2001 album, 'Songs in A Minor' (although I've changed the key!) Caged Bird has been a song that has really stuck as one of my favourites for a long time. Like a bird being set free, singing this for the final song of this set represents my release into the world and the music industry from my time in education. This footage is from my final jazz recital at the Guildhall School of Music 19/07/2012 featuring Ed Blunt on piano, Gili Lopes on bass and Dave Ingamells on Drums.

Ain't Misbehavin' - Fats Waller

Although this 1929 Waller standard has been played for decades, it remains a timeless classic and is one of my favourite jazz standards. the short soli section you will hear is composed by myself. This footage is from my final jazz recital at the Guildhall School of Music 19/07/2012 featuring Ed Blunt on piano, Gili Lopes on bass and Dave Ingamells on drums.

The Peacocks (A Timeless Place) - Jimmy Rowles / Norma Winstone

This is my arrangement of the beautiful and challenging ballad, The Peacocks by Jimmy Rowles. The lyrics are by Norma Winstone and feature on her 1993 album, 'Well Kept Secret'. The lyrics hold a lot of room for interpretation but I think they are about a partner who she never really knew completely, a relationship that was never meant to be although they were both blind to this. The 'timeless place' that she is describing with the peacocks is a place of truth where she can see how things really are. This footage is from my final jazz recital at the Guildhall School of Music 19/07/2012 featuring, Ed Blunt on piano, Gili Lopes on bass and Dave Ingamells on drums.

Fruit Tree - Nick Drake

This haunting song is from Nick Drake's 1969 album, 'Five Leaves Left'. It tells of a painful truth to know that people are often remembered and treasured more after death then in life. Drake ironically died almost exactly five years after Five Leaves Left was released from a drug overdose and it was the case that drake achieved more fame after his death than in life, as the song speaks of. He failed to find a wide audience in his life time but in 80's and 90's he was being credited as being an influential artist. There were songs dedicated to him, a biography, a documentary and he sold more records than ever! This footage is taken from my final jazz recital at the Guildhall School of Music 19/07/2012 and features Jamie Leeming on guitar.
